what i'll be watching this fall...

it's that time of year again!!! for the past... i don't know how many years i have been writing a blog about what i will be watching on tv for the coming fall season. as time passes i feel like i have less time to commit to tv since i have other more important commitments to chad, blue and sewing. but that doesn't mean that i won't give my very best effort to watch the shows that i love and to be a good tv fan! also, in the past few years some really great shows have been canceled much to my disappointment. so i find it a bit harder to really "love" a new show, when i know that the powers that be may can it after a season or two. there are quite a few new shows this season, some look good and some look like they'll be total crap. only time will tell which will be which. this is not a list of everything i will be watching but rather an overview of the shows that will be on tv and the ones that either seem interesting or ones who's plot seems so dumb or uninteresting that i don't know why they're on tv.

MONDAY:
 7pm
  • how i met your mother (season 6 cbs  9/20)  i actually won't be watching this live because i am always one season behind. the 5th season dvd will be released next month and chad and i will have a himym marathon and we'll be good to go until next year when they release this year's season. that's just how we roll, it is a great show!
  • house (season 7 fox  9/20) i will not be watching house, i gave up on it. i just didn't care anymore about anybody on the show or what dramas and sub dramas  were going on in it. house went from being one of my favorite shows to one of my least during the course of season 5. i don't miss it at all.

8pm

  • the event (series premiere nbc  9/20) these new "conspiracy/eclectic group of people who are brought together for some world changing crap" type shows just don't grab my attention. i tried to watch that other one last season.... the blackout one.... i don't even remember the name but it lost my interest after three episodes. same thing for V, it kept my interest for 5 or 6 episodes but over all... i want to be entertained, not bored to death.
  • lone star (series premiere fox  9/20) this show may be good. one guy, two identities leading two separate lives. married in one town with a kid and a job with the in-laws, long time girlfriend in another town.  i will definitely give this show a shot but i make no promises.
  • gossip girl (season 4 cw  9/13) my guilty pleasure show returns!!! **spoiler alert** however if chuck bass dies after being shot i am OUT! sorry, but i can't watch without my boyfriend ed westwick- that mother chucker.

9pm
  • chase (series premiere nbc  9/20) ummmmm, i'm pretty sure i am over the "____(insert agency here) chasing down today's most  dangerous random criminal" type show. i will give it a shot, since it is brought to us by jerry bruckheimer but i'm not holding my breath.
  • hawaii five-0 (series premiere {if you can call it that} cbs  9/20) i'm really not feeling remakes of shows/movies in general. can't anybody come up with an original idea anymore? HOWEVER alex o'loughlin is my former favorite vampire boyfriend (from moonlight, a great show canceled after one season and breaking my fragile heart).  also, jin from LOST is a cast member so i won't brush this show off YET, but i will be watching with a very critical eye.
TUESDAY

7pm
  • no ordinary family (series premiere abc  9/28) uuuuh, heroes anybody?!?!  in no way can i see this show making it. the commercials that i have seen thus far do not make me want to watch at all. i'll be shocked (and pissed) if this show makes it when sarah connor chronicles was canceled (yes, i'll be holding on to that grudge for a long time.)
  • ncis (season 8 cbs  9/21) i stopped watching this series a few seasons ago, the episodes just started to bleed together and i couldn't waste my precious time any longer. it's not a bad show, just not good enough to spend my time watching.
  • gLee (season 2 fox  9/21) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  need i say more? i am so beyond excited about the upcoming season of gLee!! i can't wait to see the guest appearances this season, hoping that there will be a repeat visit from neil patrick harris.
8pm

  • raising hope (series premiere fox  9/21) this may have a slight chance at being a good show but it will have to impress me to the fullest in the one episode that i will be watching/judging. basic premise: irresponsible guy still living with parents ends up having to raise a baby born to a felon who is incarcerated. i don't hold out hope that this will be worth my dvr space.
  • 8:30- running wilde (series premiere fox  9/20) i haven't seen any advertisements for this show yet but after reading the synopsis i do hope that it is good. from the creators of arrested development and starring will arnett also of arrested, a filthy rich immature playboy tries to win or buy the affection of his childhood sweetheart. crossing my fingers for this one.
9pm
  • parenthood (season 2 nbc  9/14) i am so excited that this show got picked up for a second season. i LOVE lauren graham and missed her dearly after gilmore girls ended. the show is cast excellently and the writing is superb. watching this show makes me want a big family... but then i realize that my life is not a tv show and i don't have lauren graham's wardrobe or wit. if you haven't watched this family drama you definitely should give it a try. also cast: craig t. nelson, peter krause, dax shepard (yeah, he actually acts), monica potter, erika christensen....
WEDNESDAY

7pm
  • the middle (season 2 abc  9/22) this show is so funny, patricia heaton definitely makes it work and you can feel the motherly frustration of having kids who don't get how hard you try and a husband who tries but doesn't quite get it either, "brick" the youngest kid makes me laugh the most. if you haven't watched the middle you definitely should watch one episode and see if you don't feel better about your own situation or atleast look at what you're dealing with and have a sense of humor about it.
  •
survivor (season 21 cbs  9/15) moving from thursday night to wednesday (a first) this season of survivor will be set in nicaragua and the tribes will be young against the old... i don't know if that seems fair since most of the survivor challenges are physical and fewer are strictly mental. we'll see how this season pans out. however, i just found out today that jeff probst has been having an affair with mark paul gosselaar's wife and they (mpg and his wife) are now split up and getting a divorce.  in the now famous words of chet cannon:  "Nobody cheats on Zack Morris, NOBODY....except his wife, who I now hate because Zack is way cooler than the home wrecking Survivor Host. F cheating"

  • 7:30 better with you (season premiere abc  9/22) i seriously doubt i will watch this show, i will possibly give it the one episode look over but it just doesn't sound interesting or good at all.  girl with a long time boyfriend has a sister who has had a very short relationship with a guy and they suddenly announce marriage and a baby.  the parents of the sisters are over the moon about the marriage/baby situation much to the bewilderment of long relationship sister. sounds boring to me.
8pm
  • modern family (season 2 abc  9/22) this was one of my favorite comedies of last season. there wasn't an episode that didn't make me laugh out loud. the cast is wonderful and the writing makes me glad that those writers were born, educated and able to break into the business.  i have no doubt that this season will be just as good as the first and i hope that there are many seasons to come. congratulations are in order for winning the emmy this year for "outstanding comedy series", "outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series" eric stonestreet, and "outstanding writing for a comedy series" so obviously this show is outstanding.
  • 8:30 cougar town (season 2 abc  9/22)  i didn't start out watching season one of cougar town and those who know me know that i just can't start watching a show without first catching up on what i've missed. i just today decided that i will watch the second season of cougar town so that means i have some catching up to do! i did catch one or two episodes last season and it seemed genuinely funny, and courtney cox is a great actress who i have missed since friends ended all those years ago. wasn't a fan of "dirt" so i'm glad she's back into a comedy where she can shine.
9pm
  • the whole truth (series premiere abc  9/22) i'm fairly certain i will not watch this show. after reading the synopsis online i jotted down "eeh", that doesn't inspire much confidence that it will actually be worth watching. the show will give a view of both sides of the law in the courtroom from both the prosecution and the defense in essence giving "the whole truth". i'm not intrigued.
  • the defenders (series premiere cbs  9/22) what is it with wednesday night 9pm law shows? this one seems like it may actually be good, maybe.  jim belushi and jerry o'connell are cast in this "comedic drama" about being defense lawyers in las vegas. if it's well written it could be good so i guess only time will tell. i'll give this show a shot.
THURSDAY

7pm
  •  my generation (series premiere abc  9/23) i'm not sure if this is a documentary or a mocumentary. but it starts with graduating high school seniors and their aspirations for life. now 10 years later where are they and how did their lives turn out?  i think i'll probably check this out and see if it's any good. after all.... they are my generation (insert corny laugh track)
  • community (season 2 nbc  9/23) joel mchale is hilarious on the soup and he is no less hilarious on community. every episode of the first season made me laugh a little and sometimes a lot!  chevy chase has never been so funny. not in the hokey way that he was sometimes funny in the earlier "family vacation" movies but in a "bungling old man who's losing it" type of way that totally works for him since he is now an old man. LOVE IT! if you love to laugh, watch it!!
  • vampire diaries (season 2 cw  9/9) i love love love this show! it is infinitely better than stupid twilight, i dare you to try to prove differently!  nina dobrev is amazingly cast as elena gilbert, newly orphaned teenage girl. paul wesley as stefan, the brooding vegetarian vampire who falls truly madly deeply for elena. and my personal favorite, ian somerhalder (my NEW favorite vampire boyfriend) as damon, the cold calculating evil  brother of stefan. love triangles abound with twists and turns in every episode. watch it, love it.
  • 7:30 S#!T my dad says (series premiere cbs  9/23) already steeped in controversy with the title of the show (named after the book)  "*bleep* my dad says" is bound to be funny with william shatner cast as the dad. i can't wait to watch, i hope it doesn't disappoint!
8pm
  • grey's anatomy (season 7  9/23) i will admit that i was sort of getting bored with grey's a few seasons ago. not bored enough to not watch, but bored enough to start looking elsewhere for my hospital drama.  however last season's finale really did it for me. i loved the fact that they did so much killing. that sounds bad but usually when a show has a big episode to add some excitement with some character killing, it usually only kills off to one or two characters but mainly leaves the cast in tact.  shot: dr. reed (short hair doc from mercy west) alex, mc.dreamy, dr. percey (the dr. in love with dr. reed also from mercy west) lexie almost shot, owen shot, dr. webber almost shot.... i can't wait to see how the next season starts!!!! (note, could NOT find an updated grey's picture without izzie or george so i just went with the old standby, mcsteamy)
  • fringe (season 3 fox  9/23) it's the X files of the 21st century. i loved fox and mulder back in the day and i love dr. bishop with his wackiness and fringe science (time travel, alternate parallel universes, hallucinogens ...)  and joshua jackson definitely fits right in as a supersmart guy from an alternate reality. anna torv cast as agent olivia dunham is growing on me, she wouldn't have been my first choice but i'll live. i am so excited about where this season will go.
  • the office (season 7 nbc  9/23) this will be steve carell's last season but not the show's last, i don't know if it will survive his departure. obviously with 6 seasons under it's belt they are doing something right. i love that the cast are "real people", for some reason we have all gotten used to seeing casts of supermodels working in offices, hospitals and police departments. what world are these people living in? the office works and i commend them on their casting decisions as a whole, i hope michael scott is replaced with someone who can easily step in and win our hearts so that this show can go on.
  • 8:30 outsourced (season premiere nbc  9/23) this show looks HILARIOUS! an american company's call center is relocated to india and an american is sent to india to run the office. they don't understand the culture and have to work on learning about america so that they can better understand the company and it's product which includes: whoopee cushions, foam fingers and things made out of bacon... in other words, all things american!  i really hope this show is as funny as the commercial made it look.

9pm
  • private practice (season 4 abc  9/23) i have had an off again on again relationship with private practice over the past three seasons. i started out saying i wasn't going to watch because i didn't like addison montgomery but then i saw and episode and it was sortof good. time passed and i lost interest but somehow came back around. there have been a lot of crazy crazy things happening including but not limited to in utero baby stealing, teen pregnancy/car wreck while teen is in labor, best friend sleeping with the ex husband...  so i can't say for sure if i will actually commit this season or not, time will tell.
  • the mentalist (season 3 cbs  9/23) i LOVED the first season of the mentalist, i couldn't get enough of it. but then my interest sort of waned and i only sporadically watched the second season. i hate to say it but i really am not interested in most of the characters. patrick jane and the asian guy are the only ones who really grab my attention at all. i probably won't watch this season.
  • it's always sunny in philadelphia (seaon 6 fx  9/16) this show is hilarious. chad watches it more than i do and i don't think we're even caught up on all of the seasons, but i have never watched an episode and not laughed. tho i have watched a few episodes and been appalled, but in a good way.
 FRIDAY
7pm
  • medium (season 7 cbs  9/24) i have loved medium since the beginning and was so happy that cbs decided to pick up the series last season after nbc canceled it. i genuinely like the cast, tho am deeply disturbed by the bickery relationship that allison and joe have. unless most marriages are like that and i just happen to be lucky? i don't know. anyway, i'm ready for new episodes and to see what trouble the ghosts give allison this season.

 8pm
  • body of proof (series premiere abc ?date)  this looks like it may be good. world renowned neurosurgeon is involved in a devastating car accident which renders her useless as a surgeon. she becomes a medical examiner. i will definitely give this show a try.
  • the good guys (season 1.5 fox  9/24) colin hanks (tom hanks son) is cast in this show set in dallas police department. his assignment is to babysit a former "top cop" who has a way of doing his own thing, to hell with rules and procedure. i think it's a funny show. it is not at all a "real" cop show, chad hates it.
 9pm
  • blue bloods (series premiere cbs  9/24) a cop show with magnum p.i's own tom selleck! that's all that really needs to be said, right? it looks like it will be a well written well acted show and i hope it doesn't disappoint.

 SUNDAY
7pm
  •  the amazing race (season 17 cbs  9/26) the amazing race is a fun show to watch, it is both exciting and informative as you learn things about other countries.  you're always guaranteed the chance to laugh at someone jumping, crawling or falling into mud during one of the challenges which is a plus. it's not a show that i "must watch" but i do enjoy it.
 8pm
  • dexter (season 5 showtime  9/26) best show out there! i love dexter morgan, the serial killer who only kills killers... mostly.  the writing and acting are superb, anybody who can make you love a serial killer is talented for sure. i can't wait to see what happens this season, the last left me shocked and excited.
  • under cover boss (season 2 cbs  9/26) a show where various american company ceos go under cover and work the jobs that the "little people" work. they get to see how hard these jobs are and sometimes how little pay and appreciation are given. i've watched quite a few episodes from the first season and i liked it a lot.

MISC: the following shows are ones that have already aired or are in mid season right now that i have watched/been watching.
  • weeds (season 6 showtime) i love nancy botwin! widow starts out selling weed to support her family after her husband's sudden death..... fast forward 5 years she's married to a mexican drug cartel leader and pregnant with his baby. drama drama drama.
  • united states of tara (season 2 showtime) what would you do if you had people living inside of you? tara has  (also known as: multiple personality disorder)  she's a married mother of two just trying to live and let live.  the tagline is: "just your average mother, teenager, biker dude, housewife."  i like it! dissociative identity disorder
  • big brother (season 12 cbs) i don't think that any season can ever be as good as last season with jeff and jordan tho this seasons cast members gave it their best try to "be" last season. a pathetic showmance ensued and made america throw up in their mouths a little, a self proclaimed diabolical supergenius was less supergenius than he thought but lots of people got made fun of so there's that. the season will conclude sometime in september with the winner walking away with $500,000. i really don't care at this point who wins because i don't love any of them. at least gnatalie didn't come back this season.
  • the big c  (premiere season showtime) about a woman who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. instead of telling anybody that she has cancer she just decides to start living life like every day is her last, so far it's good.
and finally the sad part of my tv blog, shows that have been canceled. =(

ABC
  • better off ted-  a great and funny show that i will miss. i'm not surprised that it was canceled because shows that i love do tend to meet an early demise.
  • dirty sexy money-  another show that i loved therefore it had to be canceled.
  • eastwick-  sortof sucked and deserved to be canceled
  • eli stone
  • flash forward-  THAT'S the one that i couldn't think of from before.... the one with the worldwide blackout that was boring. it deserved to get the axe.
  • life on mars
  • LOST- a scheduled cancellation, i will miss it in a way, but my brain did get tired of all of the twists and turns and magnetic fields.
CBS
  •  cold case
  • gary unmarried
  • ghost whisperer
  • the new adventures of old christine- loved the show and am surprised that it lasted as long as it did. cbs only released the first 2 seasons on dvd even tho 5 aired. blaah.
  • numbers
  • three rivers
  • the unit
  • without a trace
  • worst week
 FOX
  • dollhouse
  • til death
NBC
  • my own worst enemy
  • mercy
  • trauma
and THAT concludes my yearly "what to watch" blog.... til 2011
couch potato out

verbage peeve

let me start by saying that apparently the word "verbage" isn't a real word in the english language but it is found in the urban dictionary. but if it were a real word it would mean: "word placement, relating to the correct usage of one or more words. Usually used to point out the mistakes of saying something wrong." as in: Marty used bad verbage when she said, "tripiplicated" instead of triplicate.

yesterdays sudden onset of vertigo and nausea got me thinking about how people misuse the word nauseous vs nauseated. so let me break it down for you:

when you say "i feel nauseous.", you are inferring that you cause nausea in others, and perhaps you do. maybe you're so gross, smelly or ugly that upon being in your vicinity people become nauseated... but probably not.

the correct sentence when you feel the urge to hurl is "i feel nauseated."

you're welcome!

time flies

today as i was eating the rest of my leftover turkey and cheese subway sandwich, i found myself remembering the "old" subway sandwiches. you know, the ones with the wedge cut out of the top?  i wondered, "what ever happened to subway cutting their sandwiches like that?" now they just cut them like any regular sandwich and honestly it feels a little plain jane for me. surely it's only been a couple of years since they made the switch in the cut style, right? so i went to the trusty internet to do some investigation. what i found shocked me, it has been ten years, TEN YEARS! since subway moved from the "U-GOUGE" cutting technique (u-gouge, really? that sounds quite violent for sandwich terminology) to the "hinge", which sounds much more sandwich-like. the reason they made the switch? people felt like more meat fit in a sandwich cut with a hinge than with a u-gouge out of the top of it, when in fact they both contain the same amount of meat(who knew?).  apparently some subway restaurants will still cut your bread the old fashioned way if you ask them to. however many employees don't know HOW to cut the bread in the u-gouge manner as it is a very complicated task to master. really? how hard can it be if 15 year olds can learn to do it? exxxxactly. because it's been ten years since subway has moved away from the u-gouge there probably aren't a lot of stores who still employ "sandwich artists" who know how to make the cut; and i'm not sure that i would like to chance it and have somebody butcher MY future lunch.

another question that i came across when searching the "subway wedge cut" (as i referred to it before i learned the proper terminology; but also known as a "meat boat") was "did they copy toasting from quiznos?".  the general consensus was that they had, in fact copied. i don't care, i'll take a "subway toasted sub" anyday over a "quiznos razor sharply toasted cardboard that they pretend is bread sandwich". there is a huge difference in the method that is used for toasting the breads. subway uses a convection oven and quiznos uses some type of blazing hot tiny pizza oven specially made for sharpening edges.  "the better to slice up the roof of your mouth with, my dear" should be their slogan.
part of the reason that subway phased out the u-gouge was that toasting the wedge piece turned it into a "U" shaped crouton and that didn't jive well with the rest of the subway toasted sub experience. so there you go, for all of you who have wondered for ten years, TEN YEARS! what happened to the old style subway sandwich... wonder no more.
